Replacing your overpressure plug is the single most important routine maintenance you can do for your All American pressure canner. This small rubber plug is your last line of defense — rated to automatically release pressure at approximately 23 PSI if the vent pipe becomes blocked, if there's overheating, or if there's too much water loss.

"We recommend that you replace the overpressure plug every 12 months, or before if it becomes hard, cracked or deformed. Never reuse a blown overpressure plug."
All American Instruction Manual No. 74

Our plugs are genuine parts direct from the Wisconsin Aluminum Foundry. Having a spare on hand means you're always prepared for your next canning session. How to check your plug: From the underside of the lid, the plug should be soft, flexible, and free of cracks. If it feels rigid or shows surface cracking, replace it before your next session.

The Vent Pipe Cleaning Rod — Simple, Essential Safety

All American Pressure Canner 75 Cleaning Rod for Vent Pipe

Check your pressure canner vent pipe regularly to ensure it is clear and free of buildup or obstructions. Before every use, hold the lid up to light and look through the vent pipe. If you can't see light through it, it's blocked. A clogged vent pipe prevents the regulator weight from maintaining proper pressure and forces the overpressure plug to do the heavy lifting — that's not how it's designed to work.

This simple cleaning rod (Part No. 75) is designed specifically for clearing dangerous deposits from the vent pipe. Straightforward, remarkably effective, and ships free.

Good Spare Parts to Have on Hand

These are the accessories and spare parts we recommend keeping available so your canning season is never stopped short.

Your All American Maintenance Schedule

A few minutes of routine care is all that stands between you and decades more of safe pressure canning.

When Task Why It Matters
Before Each Use Check vent pipe clarity (hold lid up to light) A blocked vent pipe prevents proper pressure and forces the overpressure plug to work overtime.
Before Each Use Check overpressure plug — soft and pliable? Hard, cracked, or deformed plugs must be replaced before use. Never operate with a questionable plug.
Before Each Use Check metal-to-metal seal lubrication Apply a thin film of petroleum jelly to the inside bevel every 3–4 uses. A dry seal can leak and is very difficult to remove.
Monthly (During Season) Clean the overpressure plug opening with a small brush and hot soapy water Food or grease buildup in the plug opening can prevent proper seating and cause leaks below 5 PSI.
Monthly (During Season) Wipe metal-to-metal seal with clean cloth to remove hardened lubricant buildup 0000 grade steel wool can be used carefully — avoid hard scrubbing which can damage the seal.
Annually Replace the overpressure plug (Part No. 2040) Rubber degrades over time. Replace regardless of appearance — the cost is minimal, the safety benefit is significant.
After Each Use / Storage Store completely dry with lid off or upside down Storing with moisture inside causes pitting. Always store in a dry area with the cover separate from the bottom.
As Needed Test steam gauge accuracy (via county extension agent) Gauges drift ±1–2 PSI new, and can reach 5–10 PSI off over time. With a weight-gauge canner, trust the weight — but knowing your gauge reading helps.

Maintenance & Accessories Frequently Asked Questions

Replace it every 12 months as a baseline, per the Wisconsin Aluminum Foundry’s recommendation. But also replace it immediately if it becomes hard, cracked, or deformed before the year mark. To check: remove the plug from the underside of the lid and squeeze it gently. A good plug is soft and pliable. A plug that feels rigid, shows surface cracking, or has any visible damage should be replaced before you use the canner again. Never reuse a blown overpressure plug.

From the underside of the lid, pull the plug out using your fingers — no tools needed. After cleaning the opening with hot soapy water and a small brush, reinstall by pushing the round top side of the plug into the opening from the underside of the cover. When correctly positioned, the indented portion of the plug is visible when viewing the underside. After inserting, verify that the round top and top lip are fully through the opening — the top lip must not be folded under.

Check it before every use — hold the lid up to light and verify you can see through the vent pipe. If light doesn’t pass through, it’s blocked. Use the cleaning rod (Part No. 75) to gently clear any deposits, then rinse with hot water. During heavy canning seasons, run the cleaning rod through more frequently, especially if you notice any changes in how the regulator weight behaves.

Petroleum jelly (Vaseline) is ideal. Apply a thin film to the inside bevel — the area on the bottom of the cooker where the inside wall begins to bevel outward — every third or fourth use. Also apply to the threads of the Bakelite wing nuts and the metal face around the lid opening. Use just enough to wet the surface; wipe away any visible excess. Never let the seal go completely dry.

Room temperature storage is strongly recommended. Extreme cold damages the gauge — though you can still trust your regulator weight if you must store in very cold conditions. More importantly, the overpressure plug should be replaced more frequently if stored cold. Store with the lid off (or upside down on the bottom) and ensure both pieces are completely dry before storing to prevent pitting.

Yes — always use a rack. Jars and cans should never stand directly on the bottom of the canner. The rack positions jars correctly for steam circulation, prevents contact with the hot aluminum bottom, and keeps jars stable. Place the rack rim-side down. If using two layers of jars (possible in larger models), use a rack between layers as well.

Yes, this is normal — up to a point. A small amount of steam or moisture around the overpressure plug is expected as pressure builds. The plug is rated to stop leaking once approximately 5 PSI is reached on the gauge. If leaking continues beyond that, the cause is usually a worn or deformed plug (replace it) or grease/food buildup in the plug opening (clean with hot soapy water and a small brush).
